Exciting News: Backyard Sports Animated Series Now Available on Prime Video
Backyard Sports Animated Special Launches on Prime Video
The first-ever Backyard Sports animated special is now available on Prime Video in select territories, following its initial release on YouTube earlier this year. Titled "Sticky Situation," the special marks the return of the beloved franchise with new content for the first time in over a decade.
In this episode, the iconic Backyard kids embark on an urgent mission to help team superstar Stephanie "Bubbles" Morgan locate her lucky bubble gum just 30 minutes before game time.
Prime Video subscribers in the United States, Canada, and Australia can enjoy this latest adventure at no additional cost. The move to Amazon comes after the episode quickly gained traction on YouTube, accumulating over 1 million unique views since its premiere on January 29. This achievement is notable given that the revival of the Backyard Sports franchise is being conducted independently of any major studio.
Lindsay Barnett, CEO of Playground Productions, acquired the rights to the games several years ago. She has since overseen their relaunch across mobile devices and modern consoles.
"We’re incredibly grateful to our fans for the amazing response to the special," Barnett stated. "It’s a powerful validation that storytelling across multiple forms, especially animation, can meaningfully expand the Backyard Sports universe. I’m truly proud that we created something that honors and celebrates the magic of childhood. As our fans have noted, the special captures the charm and nostalgia of classic ’90s Saturday morning cartoons while bringing the excitement and energy of our revitalized brand."
Chris Waters, Chief Production Officer at Playground Productions, echoed Barnett’s sentiments, emphasizing the enduring legacy of the franchise’s characters. "This special is our first step in bringing the richness and vibrancy of their world to life through story," he said.
The voice cast for the animated special features notable talents including Tiffany Haddish as Kiesha Phillips, Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Dmitri Petrovich, Donald Faison as Dante Robinson, and Ego Nwodim as Stephanie Morgan. Other voices include Ashleigh Crystal Hairston as Sunny Day, Adam Pally as Pete Wheeler, and Utkarsh Ambudkar as Achmed Khan, among others.
The special is executive produced by Chris Waters, Lindsay Barnett, Avi Savitski, and Ari Pinchot, with Phil Crain serving as Line Producer. The script is penned by Joe Purdy, known for “Hey Arnold!” and directed by Mike Roberts, known for “Final Space” and “BoJack Horseman.” Animation production is being handled by Lighthouse Studios, with original music by Jonny Shorr.
