James Marsden Hints at Cyclops’ Comeback in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ with Spot-On Costume: “Wearing It Was Awesome”
James Marsden is set to return as Cyclops in the forthcoming Avengers: Doomsday, recently sharing insights about his role in the Marvel film.
During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the actor discussed donning the iconic X-Men costume again, this time designed to reflect the original comic aesthetics.
Marsden remarked on the differences from previous versions, stating, “The first movies, we were just in black leather … they were very tight, very restrictive. We couldn’t move.”
Reflecting on his experience filming the first X-Men movie, Marsden recalled a scene where he and Hugh Jackman had to jump over a retaining wall near the Statue of Liberty, describing the moment as nearly disastrous. “We both were tripping over it,” he said, noting that he didn’t feel like a superhero in those constricting costumes and was concerned they might “get fired.”
With the new costume, he expressed a sense of pride: “To put this on felt very cool … felt very proud.”
However, one challenge in reprising the role involves limited visibility due to the visor. Marsden first portrayed Scott Summers, also known as Cyclops, in 2000’s X-Men, reprising the role in 2003’s X2 and 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand. He made a cameo appearance in 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past.
The upcoming Avengers: Doomsday will mark the introduction of the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, following Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox in 2019. Alongside Marsden, other familiar faces, including Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier/Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler), and Rebecca Romijn (Mystique), will also reprise their roles.
