Luka Doncic Shines with 40 Points as LeBron James Adds 30 in Lakers’ Victory Over Rockets
Lakers Triumph Over Rockets with Stellar Performances from Doncic and James
HOUSTON — The Los Angeles Lakers secured a compelling 124-116 victory against the Houston Rockets at Toyota Center on Wednesday, fueled by remarkable performances from Luka Doncic and LeBron James. This win marked the Lakers’ seventh consecutive victory and allowed them to clinch the three-game series against the Rockets, finishing with a 2-1 record.
Doncic showcased his skills, falling just short of a triple-double with 40 points, 10 assists, and nine rebounds. In support, James contributed significantly, scoring 30 points on an impressive 13-of-14 shooting, along with five rebounds and two assists.
A standout moment came when Doncic delivered a no-look lob pass to James, resulting in a thunderous dunk. Following that, Doncic sank a critical three-pointer with 58.4 seconds remaining, pushing the Lakers to a commanding 120-111 lead. The crowd erupted as Doncic celebrated, and his teammates quickly offered their admiration.
The victory solidified the Lakers’ position in the Western Conference, giving them a 1.5-game lead over the Minnesota Timberwolves for the third seed.
In a tense moment during the game, James was fouled by Jabari Smith Jr. on a breakaway layup, landing hard on the court while holding his right elbow. Despite the incident, James’s performance remained stellar; with 5:39 left in the game, he made one of two free throws to tie the score at 105-105.
With James sitting for a brief rest, Doncic took charge, scoring to give the Lakers a two-point lead and assisting Rui Hachimura for a corner three-pointer soon after. Doncic’s own three-pointer extended the lead to 113-109 with 3:12 remaining.
James, in his 1,610th career appearance, had several highlight moments, including a steal and a dunk that drew cheers from the crowd, emphasizing his continued prowess at 41 years old. He also showcased his athleticism with a one-handed dunk off a lob from Marcus Smart early in the second quarter and followed it with another dunk later that increased the Lakers’ lead to 13 points.
By halftime, James had scored 18 points, making all eight of his attempts, which helped the Lakers establish a 12-point lead going into the second half.
Facing a Rockets team eager for revenge after their prior loss, the Lakers also had to contend with the return of All-Star center Segun, who had missed the previous game due to low back pain.
Despite the challenges, the Lakers’ defense made an impact by forcing four turnovers in the first quarter, contributing to their early 35-26 lead.
Lakers’ head coach JJ Redick said, “I just think regardless of what our coverage is, we just got to do a better job of boxing out. We’ve got to have some contact.” He acknowledged that while the team still managed to win, there are areas for improvement, particularly in rebounding.
