Santa Monica Police Use Technology to Capture Armed Robbery Suspect
Santa Monica Police Use Real-Time Crime Analysis to Apprehend Armed Suspect
Santa Monica police officials highlighted their real-time crime analysis system following the capture of an armed suspect involved in a robbery at a convenience store. The incident occurred on Monday at approximately 4:15 p.m. at the 7-Eleven store located on Lincoln Boulevard.
According to police, the suspect attempted to steal merchandise but brandished a firearm when confronted by store employees, causing panic before fleeing the scene.
Upon receiving reports of the incident, the Santa Monica Police Department swiftly activated its SMART Center. This advanced technology and support system is designed to gather critical data rapidly and assist in ongoing investigations.
The suspect, identified as 26-year-old David Ramirez, was apprehended shortly thereafter at the intersection of 6th and Grant streets.
The SMART Center features a range of tools, including security cameras, automated license plate readers, and drones, enhancing the department’s ability to respond to such incidents. In 2023, the system received a significant upgrade after the department was allocated over $6 million from the state government aimed at bolstering efforts against retail theft.
