Laura Dave Shares Insights on the Twist in Episode 204 of ‘The Last Thing He Told Me’
SPOILER ALERT: This article contains spoilers for Season 2 Episode 4 of The Last Thing He Told Me, titled "Ghosts."
In a pivotal moment of The Last Thing He Told Me, author Laura Dave reflects on the creative process behind the sequel, The First Time I Saw Him. The continuation of Hannah Hall’s story follows the cliffhanger ending of both the first book and the show’s inaugural season, with a key scene in mind as she crafted the new narrative.
Dave penned the second novel while collaborating with the production team on Season 2 of the Apple TV series. The current season sees Jennifer Garner (Hannah), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Owen), Angourie Rice (Bailey), and others returning to their roles in the gripping thriller. A significant twist in Episode 204 ties into the overarching storyline of the sequel.
At the onset of Season 2, viewers witness a return to the "five years of calm" between Hannah and Bailey following a deal made with Bailey’s grandfather, Nicholas. However, this calm quickly descends into chaos, culminating in Nicholas’s false death—a plot twist sparked by poisoning. This event stirs up unresolved tensions with the Campano family, known for their criminal activities, hinted at in the first season.
"I had that imagining in my head, so I was writing toward that," Dave shared. "I was writing toward a couplet that I couldn’t let go, which happens about two thirds of the way through the book."
The complexities of Hannah’s prior agreement with Nicholas developed as a consequence of Owen’s attempts to expose the Campanos’ illegal operations, putting Hannah and Bailey in jeopardy. Frank Campano’s longstanding friendship with Nicholas allowed him to negotiate their safety, provided Owen kept his distance.
During the show’s development, co-showrunner Josh Singer noted the need to elevate the stakes for the second season. "We really didn’t explore the Campanos in the first season," he explained, emphasizing a shift in focus towards the Campano family dynamics now that Nicholas’s influence has waned.
Teddy and Quinn Campano are portrayed by Luke Kirby and Judy Greer, respectively. Teddy manages the daily operations of their family’s business, while Quinn is determined to distance herself from the criminal legacy.
"We were very lucky to get Judy and Luke and John Noble to come and play with us," Singer remarked, expressing enthusiasm over the casting. "It really was an embarrassment of riches."
The inclusion of the Campano siblings allows for a broader narrative scope this season, balancing the familiar core characters with new, engaging storylines. "It turns out that those instincts to drive towards the other side wound up coming around and being quite helpful as we move to the crescendo and climax of the season," he added.
New episodes of The Last Thing He Told Me Season 2 are released Fridays on Apple TV.
