Kacey Musgraves Opens Up About Her Relationship with Miranda Lambert

Kacey Musgraves has openly addressed her rumored feud with Miranda Lambert on Instagram, confirming that their history includes more than just speculation.
In a recent interview with NPR, published on March 11, Musgraves reflected on their past tensions, stating, “It was two singers from two nearby, small Texas towns. There’s a lot that comes with that.” Despite their rocky history, the two artists have now collaborated on a new track titled “Horses and Divorces.”
The origins of their tension date back over 15 years. Musgraves revealed that she penned the hit “Mama’s Broken Heart” while working as a songwriter for Warner/Chappell. “It was gonna be my first single, and I loved the song so much,” she told NPR. However, Lambert recorded it without Musgraves’ consent, leading to a complicated dynamic. The song became part of Lambert’s 2011 album, *Four the Record*, reaching No. 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2013. Meanwhile, Musgraves found success with her debut single “Merry Go ‘Round,” which peaked at No. 63.
Musgraves noted that the two had lost touch over the years. However, after seeing Lambert on Instagram with a horse, Musgraves thought, “Well, we ain’t friends, but I guess we have two things in common: horses and divorces.” This led her to consider co-writing a duet centered on their shared experiences.
Recalling her decision to reach out, Musgraves said, “I know we’ve had our s–t over the years, but listen, we’ve at least got two things in common.” Lambert responded positively, affirming her interest in the collaboration. “She was like, ‘Hell yeah, I’m in, let’s do it.’”
Musgraves described their writing session as cathartic, stating, “We aired out any of the old laundry. We had some laughs and wrote the song in a matter of a few hours.” She expressed hope that their collaboration might inspire others to resolve conflicts in a similar spirit of camaraderie.
This interview follows a playful exchange between the two artists on Instagram Stories, where Musgraves shared a nostalgic clip of Lambert accepting an award at the 2013 CMAs. Musgraves remarked, “You knew that I’d said some things about you,” to which Lambert replied, “Well I’ve done my fair share of s–t talkin’ too.”
Now, Musgraves and Lambert are poised to release “Horses and Divorces” as part of Musgraves’ new album *Middle of Nowhere*, which features 13 tracks, including notable collaborations with Willie Nelson, Billy Strings, and Gregory Allan Isakov. The album’s lead single, “Dry Spell,” was launched on March 11, marking the beginning of this new chapter in Musgraves’ career.
