Oscars Security on High Alert After FBI Warns of Possible Iranian Drone Threat in California
Security measures are heightened this weekend in anticipation of the 98th Oscars, as the FBI issued a warning regarding potential Iranian drone attacks in California.
The FBI alert, circulated to police departments throughout Southern California, indicates that as of early February 2026, Iran allegedly aimed to execute a surprise attack using unmanned aerial vehicles launched from an unidentified vessel off the U.S. coast. The warning specified that the attacks would target locations in California should the U.S. engage in military strikes against Iran.
“We have no additional information on the timing, method, target, or perpetrators of this alleged attack,” the alert stated.

As the red carpet was rolled out and preparations at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood were underway, organizers of the Oscars declined to comment on the FBI’s warning.
The Oscars have long been shielded by a robust security framework, involving coordination among various federal, regional, and local law enforcement agencies, including the LAPD.
“Nothing is getting in and no one should be afraid,” said a spokesperson. “Security is tight and ready for anything.”
Governor Gavin Newsom affirmed his continuous communication with security and intelligence officials, including the California Office of Emergency Services, to monitor potential threats linked to the Middle East conflict. Newsom noted, “While we are not aware of any imminent threats at this time, we remain prepared for any emergency in our state.” He added that the Mayor’s Office and LAPD are closely coordinating with federal and state partners to ensure the safety of Los Angeles residents, stating, “At this time, there is no specific or credible threat to Los Angeles.”
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reiterated on Wednesday that public safety is their top priority. “As part of our preparedness efforts, we remain attentive to all potential threats, including lone-actor attacks, sleeper cells, and advanced technological or cyber-related threats. Out of an abundance of caution, and in recognition of current religious observances, the Department has continued increased patrols around places of worship, cultural institutions, and other prominent locations throughout the County,” the department said.
Amid ongoing geopolitical tensions following Israel’s extensive air and missile campaign against Iran, the FBI did not provide specific commentary on its warning. However, the bureau acknowledged its role in ensuring security at the upcoming ceremony.
The 2026 Oscars are scheduled for March 15 at 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT, airing live on ABC and streaming on Hulu.
ABC News was the first to report on the FBI alert.
