A snippet of “Ranjha” was first shared publicly on March 10, during a class at Toronto Metropolitan University dedicated to Diljit Dosanjh. Students experienced an exclusive preview ahead of the track’s full release on March 13.
As the music played, students expressed amazement at being the first audience to engage with new material from the artist they have studied throughout the semester.
Richard Trapunski, the guest lecturer and national editor of *Billboard Canada*, remarked, “This is a huge moment. This is the first-ever course dedicated entirely to a Punjabi artist, and Diljit was really excited for the students here to be the first people to hear a snippet of his new international collaboration. No one else has heard this before. It feels fitting that you all get to experience this first.”
The single unites three artists with extensive careers in the global music scene. Dosanjh has achieved remarkable success as a Punjabi artist, extending his influence well beyond South Asian audiences. Meanwhile, Sia and Guetta have crafted long-standing careers that have shaped pop and dance music worldwide.
“Ranjha,” released under Warner Music India, combines Punjabi lyrical elements with electronic production and pop vocals, highlighting the growing intersection of South Asian music and global dance culture.
Dosanjh previously collaborated with Sia on the 2023 track “Hass Hass,” which marked a significant milestone, featuring on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100. “Ranjha” aims to elevate their partnership even further.
“This track carries that Punjabi heart but opens up to the world in a big way,” Dosanjh shared with *Billboard Canada*. “Working with Sia again felt natural, and having David bring his energy just took it somewhere new. It’s one of those songs that makes you move — but also feel something.”
Guetta expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration due to its cross-cultural elements. “I love when different sounds come together in a fresh way,” he stated. “This track has melody, rhythm, and attitude, everything I’m drawn to as a producer. Working with Diljit and Sia was a great vibe, and we wanted to make something people could just press play on and feel instantly.”
The release of “Ranjha” is part of an exciting period for Dosanjh, who has taken Punjabi music to larger venues globally, performing at events such as Coachella and *The Tonight Show*, as well as stadiums in Toronto and Vancouver.
The course, titled “The Music & Influence of Diljit Dosanjh,” explores the artist’s rise and encapsulates themes of culture, identity, and global music entrepreneurship. After hearing the song, students engaged in discussions about its relevance to the topics addressed in class.
“His journey represents far more than commercial success. It stands for cultural pride, creative freedom, and global representation for Punjabi and South Asian communities,” said Dosanjh’s manager Sonali Singh during the class announcement. “Seeing his impact formally recognized in an academic space is not only powerful, it’s long overdue.”
Diljit Dosanjh, Sia, and David Guetta’s “Ranjha” will be available on all streaming platforms starting Friday, March 13.
