Saturn Awards 2023: Celebrating the Winners of Avatar: Fire and Ash, Pluribus, and Andor
Winners Announced at 53rd Annual Saturn Awards
At the 53rd Annual Saturn Awards held on Sunday, James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash, along with the film Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning and the television series Pluribus and Andor, emerged as significant winners. The event celebrated the best in fantasy, science fiction, horror, superhero, and action-adventure genres.
The evening saw a host of A-list attendees, including Cameron, Tom Cruise, and George Lucas. The ceremony, organized by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films, recognized achievements across various categories.
Cameron attended the event with longtime producer Gale Anne Hurd to accept an award marking the 40th anniversary of Aliens. He also won Best Direction and Best Screenwriting, sharing the latter accolade with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver for Avatar: Fire and Ash, which received five awards in total, including honors for Best Special Effects, Best Younger Performer in a Film (Jack Champion), and Best Science Fiction Film.
Tom Cruise played a notable role as well, presenting the Visionary Award to longtime collaborator Christopher McQuarrie. Cruise won the title of Best Actor for his performance in The Final Reckoning, which was also awarded Best Action/Adventure Film.
In other highlights of the night, Sinners took home the Best Thriller Film award, while Wicked: For Good was recognized as Best Fantasy Film. Frankenstein won accolades for Best Horror Film and also achieved awards for costumes, makeup, and Best Supporting Actor (Jacob Elordi).
Lucas received the Dr. Donald A. Reed Founder’s Award, introduced by surprise guest Mark Hamill. Additionally, Star Trek was inducted into the Saturn Awards Hall of Fame, with the assistance of William Shatner. Titus Welliver received the Lance Reddick Legacy Award named in honor of his former Bosch co-star.
Hosted by Joel McHale at the Universal Hilton, the ceremony also spotlighted television achievements. Pluribus and Andor each secured three awards. Pluribus won for Best New Genre Television Series, Best Actress (Rhea Seehorn), and Best Supporting Actress (Karolina Wydra). Meanwhile, Andor was recognized as Best Science Fiction Television Series, with Diego Luna winning Best Actor and Stellan Skarsgård taking home Best Supporting Actor.
