Mom Accused of Hosting Parties for Teens with Alcohol and Encouraging Risky Behavior
California Woman Found Guilty of Child Abuse and Sexual Assault Charges
A 51-year-old California woman, known as a “party mom,” has been convicted of 48 criminal charges for allegedly hosting parties at her home where she provided alcohol to minors and encouraged inappropriate sexual behavior. The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office announced the verdict on March 4, following a jury trial that included testimonies from 20 young adults and 41 witnesses.
Prosecutors revealed that many of the victims were 14 and 15 years old, some of whom were described as “too drunk to consent” to sexual acts, which is prohibited by California law. Shannon O’Connor was accused of supplying alcohol, including vodka and Fireball whiskey, at gatherings held in her Los Gatos residence between June 2020 and May 2021.
Court documents indicate that O’Connor not only provided alcohol but also distributed condoms to minors and warned attendees against disclosing the parties to avoid her incarceration. “She endangered their safety, coordinated their sexual assaults, and she tried to get them not to tell,” said Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen, praising the courage of the minors who came forward.
During the trial, evidence emerged detailing various incidents of sexual assault at the parties. One particularly troubling allegation described how O’Connor allegedly laughed while witnessing an intoxicated teen assault a minor in a bed. In another account, she reportedly pushed a drunken teen toward a 14-year-old girl who was lying on a bed, leading to further victimization.
Prosecutors also stated that O’Connor communicated via text and Snapchat to invite minors over for these gatherings, where many would become incapacitated. Instances of dangerous behavior were highlighted, including allowing one of the teens to drive her car in a school parking lot, resulting in another teenager sustaining injuries.
In light of the jury’s decision, O’Connor now faces a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison, with sentencing scheduled for March 26. Her defense attorney, Stephen Prekoski, expressed disappointment with the verdict but did not provide further comments at the time of the ruling.
