Neighbors Rally to Protect Immigrants in Kenmure Street: Watch the Trailer for This Award-Winning Sundance Film

On May 13, 2021, agents from the UK’s Home Office descended upon Glasgow at dawn with the goal of detaining two Indian men. What transpired next has garnered significant attention, becoming both a local legend and a case study in communal action. This event is the subject of the documentary Everybody to Kenmure Street, directed by Felipe Bustos Sierra, which received a Special Jury Award for Civil Resistance at the Sundance Film Festival.
The first look at the film can be seen in the trailer available above. Recently, Icarus Films announced its acquisition of the North American rights to the documentary, a deal secured with The Party Film Sales. The date for the U.S. theatrical release is yet to be disclosed.

Academy Award-winning actress Emma Thompson serves as an executive producer for the documentary, and also features in it. In the trailer, she is seen crawling beneath an immigration paddy wagon, mimicking a tactic employed by local residents to obstruct officers.
“Everybody to Kenmure Street beautifully and powerfully demonstrates the innate and deep decency of our people whilst also highlighting the institutional mannerisms and structures that are the opposite of this,” Thompson stated. “It’s a documentary about what we as a society often do not see, but what we can do when we do see it. I’m excited to be supporting Felipe with this urgent film.”

The documentary depicts a vibrant narrative of the events that unfolded on Eid morning, when community members were alerted through local networks that two men were being taken for deportation. In a spontaneous effort, hundreds gathered in Kenmure Street to protect their neighbors, demonstrating remarkable unity without prior planning. This diverse group of individuals organized themselves in a remarkable display of solidarity, acting to guard the most vulnerable among them from governmental action.
“An inspiring and profoundly moving portrait of what ‘normal’ citizens are capable of in the face of injustice, Everybody to Kenmure Street reminds us of the power that is always inherent in the people,” reads the description of the documentary.

Felipe Bustos Sierra, a Chilean-Belgian filmmaker residing in Scotland, reflects on the significance of his work. “I am the son of a Chilean exile. My early life was filled with stories of what was lost – countries, people, ideals. This film is an act of recovery, and about the quiet, invisible lines that connect one act of resistance to another, across time. As someone says on the day; ‘sometimes all you need to be is a link in the chain,’” he stated in his director’s statement. “In Everybody to Kenmure Street, I am not trying to explain. I am trying to remember, preserve and rebuild. It’s not a film with heroes, but with presence, with voices that echo through each other. It’s a film about being present, being in the street, being together, being human.”
