Hiker Tragically Loses Life After Fall into San Gabriel River on Bridge to Nowhere Trail
Hiker Found Dead After Falling into San Gabriel River
A hiker was tragically found dead on Sunday after being swept away by fast-moving waters in the East Fork of the San Gabriel River while trekking the Bridge to Nowhere Trail in the Angeles National Forest. The San Dimas Mountain Rescue Team (SDMRT) confirmed the incident, which occurred around 8 a.m.
According to reports, team members in the vicinity were alerted by a runner who witnessed the woman fall into the river. The search for her began immediately, involving the SDMRT, Los Angeles County sheriff’s and fire departments, and other agencies.
“After a grueling search, the victim was located,” SDMRT stated in a Facebook post. “Sadly, she was deceased, and the effort turned to a recovery operation.”
The Bridge to Nowhere, an arch bridge constructed in 1936, spans the East Fork and is located in the San Gabriel Mountains northeast of Los Angeles. On the day of the incident, SDMRT volunteers were present, sharing hiking safety tips, especially important given the high water levels due to late-winter runoff.
The identity of the woman has not yet been disclosed. The Bridge to Nowhere Trail had reopened last summer after being closed due to damage from the Bridge Fire in 2024.
In their post, the rescue team cautioned hikers: “Multiple crossings are required, and even experienced hikers can be caught off guard. Turn around if the water looks too fast or deep.”
