Reseda Community Mourns Loss of 12-Year-Old Girl After Bullying Incident; LAPD Looks Into Homicide Case
Death of Reseda Middle School Student Linked to Bullying Incident
LOS ANGELES – A bullying incident at a Reseda middle school is believed to be connected to the tragic death of 12-year-old Khimberly Zavaleta Chuquipa. Her family is now sharing her story in hopes of raising awareness around bullying.
The incident reportedly began when a metal water bottle struck Khimberly in the head. Days later, she experienced severe headaches and was rushed to the hospital, where she underwent brain surgery but sadly passed away. The Los Angeles Police Department is currently investigating the case as a homicide.
Khimberly’s uncle, Guy Gazit, expressed the family’s devastation. “It’s a big loss for us,” he said outside the high school, where flowers and candles were placed in her memory. Gazit highlighted the importance of this incident as a cautionary tale, stating, “This should not happen to anybody’s kid.”
Friends of Khimberly gathered outside the school to demand justice for her. Her family described her as a vibrant young girl with a passion for volleyball who aspired to learn French.
To assist in funeral costs, family friends have established a GoFundMe page.
In response to the tragedy, the Los Angeles Unified School District released a statement, expressing its sadness over Khimberly’s death. “Our thoughts and condolences are with the student’s family, friends, and the entire school community,” the statement read. The District emphasized its commitment to student safety and well-being and confirmed cooperation with law enforcement in the ongoing investigation.
As this unfolds, the case continues to raise awareness about the serious implications of bullying and the urgent need for preventative measures in schools.
