Katherine Heigl Honors Eric Dane with Heartfelt Tribute for His Next Journey
The cast and fans of Grey’s Anatomy are in mourning following the passing of actor Eric Dane. In a heartfelt tribute, Katherine Heigl, who portrayed Dr. Izzie Stevens on the hit ABC series for six seasons, shared her thoughts on social media.
On Sunday, Heigl expressed her gratitude for having known Dane, who passed away at 53 years old after a year-long battle with ALS. “I was grateful I got to bask in his gold before he left us,” she wrote, referencing the close bond they shared.
In her Instagram post, she reflected on her discomfort with public grieving, stating, “I debated this post for days. I have never been comfortable grieving publicly.” Heigl explained that she typically processes her emotions privately, but felt compelled to honor Dane publicly to avoid misinterpretations of her silence.
Heigl acknowledged the gravity of the loss, saying, “All the ‘I’m sorries’ and ‘my prayers are with you’ ring a bit hollow in the midst of so much pain and grief.” Instead, she turned to Robert Frost’s poem “Nothing Gold Can Stay” for solace, which she has tattooed in her parents’ handwriting as a lasting reminder of the beauty of fleeting moments.
She included the poem in her tribute: “‘Nature’s first green is gold, her hardest hue to hold. Her early leaf’s a flower; but only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief, so Dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay.’ I will never forget Eric’s gold and I will forever be grateful I got to bask in it for even a brief moment in time. Thank you for sharing him with us. God speed, my old friend… here’s to your next great adventure.”
Dane’s family confirmed his passing on Thursday, sharing that he had been diagnosed with ALS last April. “With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS,” they stated. “He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”
