Catcher Carson Sheffer Shines in Season Opener: A Look at the Baseball and Softball Highlights
Carson Sheffer Shines in Season Opener for Oaks Christian
In a promising start to the baseball season, senior catcher Carson Sheffer of Oaks Christian showcased his impressive off-season development during the team’s opener against Valencia. Known for his elite defensive skills and powerful arm, Sheffer surprised many with his enhanced hitting, recording two doubles, an infield single, and a stolen base as Oaks Christian secured a 2-0 victory.
Sheffer, an Oklahoma State commit, is also considered a strong candidate for professional baseball. Last season, his teammate Quentin Young was selected in the second round of the draft. Coach Rick Hirtensteiner noted that Young managed the pressure of expectations by focusing on enjoyment, a mindset that Sheffer appeared to adapt as he played alongside his younger brother, Ryan, who is a starting shortstop for the team.
In the game, Sheffer notched an RBI double in the third inning, contributing significantly to the team’s performance. Luke Puls added an RBI single in the seventh, solidifying the win.
On the mound, Connor Shahagun delivered an outstanding performance, throwing 4 2/3 scoreless innings, while Gavin Geyer provided another 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief.
In other games across the region, Castaic defeated Cleveland 10-0 with Aiden Arroyo driving in two runs and Andrew Bond allowing just one hit. Santa Margarita achieved a 7-0 victory over Crespi, backed by a stellar five-inning debut from sophomore Tyler George, who struck out nine batters. St. Francis edged out Hueneme 6-3 with notable performances from JT Martin, Daniel Izaguirre, and Landon Pure, each contributing two hits.
