Christa Miller Shares Behind-the-Scenes Insights from Episode 304 of “Shrinking,” Including Liz’s Flaw and Music Choices for Derek’s Scene
SPOILER ALERT: This report contains plot details from Shrinking Season 3 Episode 4, “The Field.”
In the latest episode of Shrinking, Harrison Ford’s character, Paul, finds a measure of clarity, while Liz and Derek navigate more challenging circumstances.
The episode culminates with Liz, played by Christa Miller, sharing poignant thoughts on parenting her 25-year-old son, Matthew (Markus Silbiger), who recently lost his job. Following this setback, he has moved back in with his parents and then with his brother, Will (Matt Mitchell). Unfortunately, the timing is less than fortuitous; Matthew visits Liz and Derek to deliver a favorite snack to his father, just as Derek consumes 650 milligrams of Matthew’s weed gummies, mistakenly believing they are regular candy.
Prior to Derek’s unintentional high, Liz had requested that Derek be the one to talk to Matthew about moving out, after consulting Paul on what might be best for their son.
"It’s interesting, because at our house, I am the taskmaster. I grew up in New York City, had a lot of independence. You can’t control adult children like you want to; they’ve got to make mistakes," Miller explained. "I’m always here for my kids. They can tell me the bratty things they might not share with Bill. With Liz, she thinks she can be a carnival barker and share everything, expecting them to listen like they did when they were kids. But they’re not. We definitely differ in parenting styles."
Miller, who also serves as the music supervisor for the series, provided insights into the selection of Vampire Weekend’s “Capricorn” for the scene where Derek finds himself wandering around in a daze. She and co-star Ted McGinley noted this plot point was inspired by a true story from the writers’ room.
"[Vampire Weekend] has that hectic vibe of a little anxiety. I thought it worked perfectly there," she remarked. “That scene—I’m not going to say who it is, but it comes from a real story that happened to someone in our writers room.”
The portrayal of Liz’s character extends beyond storyline elements, as some viewers see her as a fashion icon. In Season 3, Miller made a conscious choice to reflect the experiences of Los Angeles and Altadena through her character’s wardrobe, particularly after wildfires impacted the area at the start of 2025.
“We’re really proud that we shoot in LA, and Pasadena and Altadena were really affected by the fires,” Miller said. "Our two houses that we use were impacted, and we were delayed in shooting because of it. Bill made the decision to wait, so we didn’t shoot those scenes until three-quarters into the season, and we had to shoot both days and nights. None of the actors complained."
In Episode 4, Liz sports a red sweatshirt featuring “Altadena” embroidered on the chest, while in the first episode, Alice (Lukita Maxwell) wears an LA Fire Department T-shirt and Liz dons a pink shirt that reads “I Heart LA.”
"Instead of catering, we ordered from restaurants in Pasadena and Altadena for the crew and used food trucks from there," Miller added. "I wore a lot of clothes manufactured in LA on purpose."
