San Fernando Valley Welcomes LA28 Matches for the First Time
Valley to Host Olympic Events for First Time in 2028
The San Fernando Valley is abuzz with anticipation as it prepares to host Olympic events for the first time in its history during the 2028 Games. This development marks a significant milestone for a region that witnessed the Olympics from a distance in both 1932 and 1984 when the events took place in Los Angeles.
In just two years, the Sepulveda Basin and Lake Balboa will serve as venues for a range of competitions. City Councilmember Imelda Padilla, who represents District 6, played a key role in advocating for the Valley’s inclusion in this global event, highlighting the importance of representation for its two million residents.
“It’s close to 40 percent of LA,” Padilla stated. “So, we finally have 40 percent of our residents not feel left out like in the past.”
The designated Olympic hub, known as the Valley Zone, will host BMX, skateboarding, pentathlon, and 3-on-3 basketball. Although the planning phase is ongoing, Padilla noted that upgrades to existing facilities are anticipated.
“This is going to be an opportunity where our local businesses are going to benefit,” she added. “Our local neighbors are going to be much more excited and play a role.”
Nancy Hoffman, president of the San Fernando Valley Chamber of Commerce, emphasized the potential economic impact of the events. With the Valley’s substantial population, many businesses may find new opportunities as the world’s attention turns to the area.
“There are many businesses here, and those that will benefit the most are already planning for LA28,” Hoffman remarked.
In preparation for the upcoming Games, the Chamber of Commerce plans to provide resources on its website to assist local businesses in capitalizing on this momentous occasion.
