Channel 4 Drama Features ‘The Voice Of Hind Rajab’ Star and Danny Dyer in Story About Iranian Embassy Siege
Danny Dyer and Motaz Malhees to Star in Channel 4’s The Siege
Channel 4 has announced an intriguing casting for its upcoming drama The Siege, featuring actors Danny Dyer and Motaz Malhees alongside David Morrissey. This series, based on Ben Macintyre’s book, recounts the gripping events of the 1980 Iranian embassy siege in London. The adaptation is crafted by Will Smith, known for his work on Slow Horses, and produced by the team behind Mr. Bates vs. the Post Office. The cast also includes Alex Jennings, recognized for his role in The Crown, and comedian Omid Djalili.
Set against the backdrop of a tense six-day standoff, The Siege portrays the moment when six armed Arab Iranian separatists took 26 hostages inside the Iranian embassy. As the situation escalates, a battle of wills unfolds among the gunmen, hostages, and police, while the SAS prepares a daring rescue mission televised to the world.
The series arrives at a particularly poignant time, coinciding with ongoing protests in Iran against the current regime and issues of economic inequality, which have drawn significant international attention and condemnation, including remarks from former U.S. President Donald Trump. Macintyre, an established authority on the subject, published his book two years ago, also known for his work on SAS: Rogue Heroes, which inspired a BBC-MGM+ series.
Malhees recently starred in The Voice of Hind Rajab, an Oscar-nominated film that highlighted the humanitarian response to the death of a Palestinian girl. His performance has positioned him as a strong advocate for Palestinian rights amidst the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, with the film receiving a notable 23-minute standing ovation at its Venice premiere.
Dyer, fresh from a BAFTA win and acclaimed for his role in Disney+’s Rivals, joins Morrissey, who will soon appear in ITV’s Gone from writer George Kay.
The Siege has secured co-production with ARTE France and is being distributed by NBCUniversal Global TV Distribution. AC Chapter One, led by producer Patrick Spence from Mr. Bates, is collaborating with Universal International Studios on this project. Lewis Arnold directs, with Richard Stokes, known for Broadchurch, serving as producer.
Channel 4 content chief Ian Katz expressed the significance of the Iranian embassy siege, stating, "The Iranian embassy siege and the daring raid which ended it was an iconic moment that forged the ferocious reputation of the modern SAS. The show is a heart-stopping, emotional thriller that reveals the little-known motivations of the hapless hostage-takers and the very human reality of what went on inside the embassy as the world looked on and Britain’s most lethal soldiers practiced their high stakes assault."

This announcement follows the recent debut of Trespasses, an Irish series based on Louise Kennedy’s novel about The Troubles, starring Gillian Anderson.
Additionally, Channel 4 is developing a darkly comic thriller titled Wrong Move, produced by Roughcut, known for Little Disasters. The series explores the chaotic interactions between three families navigating the sale of homes, all complicated by a psychopath above them in the chain. Casting details for Wrong Move have yet to be disclosed.
