Michelle Monaghan Shares Her Surprising Skin Cancer Diagnosis and What It Means for Her
Michelle Monaghan Opens Up About Melanoma Diagnosis and Skincare Advocacy
Michelle Monaghan, the 49-year-old actress known for her roles in White Lotus and Made of Honor, has bravely shared her experience with melanoma, a serious form of skin cancer, in an exclusive interview with Us Weekly. The diagnosis, which took her by surprise, has transformed her understanding of skin health and the importance of sun protection.
“I was diagnosed with melanoma several years ago, and it was something that really shocked me. I didn’t know anything about skin cancer,” Monaghan revealed. She emphasized the dangers of tanning beds, stating, “For anybody out there, please do not go to the tanning bed. You’re five times more likely to get melanoma. So I really encourage people to just get that faux tan, but wear the sunscreen.” For Monaghan, sunscreen has become a daily priority: “It’s non-negotiable for me every single day, rain or shine, 365 days a year.”
Monaghan credited her husband, Peter White, for encouraging her to seek medical advice after discovering the melanoma. “He basically saved my life,” she said. This pivotal moment prompted her to take skincare seriously and delve into ingredient safety. “Now I consider myself an advocate,” she said, adding that she feels compelled to share her journey and the significance of incorporating sunscreen into daily routines.
In her dedication to skincare, Monaghan has taken on the role of global ambassador for U Beauty, a luxury skincare brand founded by Tina Chen Chang in 2019. She discussed her personal experience with the brand’s products, specifically highlighting the Resurfacing Compound, which she described as “the holy grail” of skincare. “I noticed a difference within probably about three days, just specifically like pore size and a brighter sort of look,” she noted.
As part of her skincare routine, Monaghan shared, “I get up and I wash my face, I put on the Resurfacing Compound. I like the Barrier Cream. It’s really hydrating. It’s cold here right now.” When preparing to work outdoors, she plans to use a sunscreen she loves, emphasizing her commitment to sun protection.
Looking ahead, Monaghan expressed excitement about an upcoming hockey series being produced by Netflix, which is currently untitled and created by Nick Naveda and Shawn Levy’s production company, 21 Laps. Reflecting on her newfound interest in hockey, she commented, “I’m a huge sports fan, but hockey was something that kind of eluded me…It’s a very fast game. It’s really intense, and it’s a lot of fun. So I understand the appeal.”
Monaghan’s story serves not only as a personal testament but also as a call for greater awareness regarding skin health and protection.
