L.A. Microdrama Studio Introduces New SAG-AFTRA Vertical Video Initiative
EXCLUSIVE: A new microdrama studio in Los Angeles has launched what its founders claim is one of the first SAG-AFTRA vertical video projects.
Matthew Ko, formerly of the Freddy Wexler Company, and producer Chris Crema have unveiled Knockout Shorts, which aims to showcase a “slate of fully completed original microdramas,” according to the company.
They are producing what is described as one of the first SAG microdramas featuring an Oscar-nominated actor, with additional details about the project and the actor’s identity expected soon. SAG Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland remarked that Knockout is “proving that new formats can deliver top-tier creative work while upholding strong labor standards.” The union introduced its first microdrama deal late last year.
Knockout Shorts has secured financing and established collaborations with distributors, studio partners, and global platforms, according to the firm. They aim to treat vertical video as a distinct “creative medium” rather than adapting existing film or television models.
Ko, who has a background in leading scripted and unscripted projects for The Freddy Wexler Company as well as experience with Ace Entertainment and A24, emphasized that Knockout Shorts is designed for creators who “see this space as a new canvas, not a compromise.” Crema added that the indie studio will “reflect the lessons learned” from his experiences in independently producing microdramas.
In recent years, microdramas have gained traction in Hollywood, particularly following their emergence from Asia. Several major players, including Fox, Cineverse, and Access Entertainment, are now invested in the space. The global microdrama market is projected to generate billions of dollars in revenue in the coming years.
