Kenan Thompson Shows Continued Support for Anaheim Ducks
Kenan Thompson, renowned for his role as Russ Tyler in the Mighty Ducks franchise, celebrated his love for hockey at a recent Anaheim Ducks game on February 1. The 47-year-old comedian attended the event to honor Ducks forward Alex Killorn, who was marking his 1,000th NHL game.
During the game, Thompson wore a “Tyler” jersey as a nod to his film character. He also showcased the Mighty Ducks 4 script to fans, an anticipated project that has faced rejection from Disney, according to fellow alum Emilio Estevez.
Thompson expressed his excitement on Instagram, highlighting the experience with a video of himself leading the crowd in a spirited quack. He captioned the post, "It’s good to be home. 🏒🥅 That game sure was MIGHTY!!!! GO DUCKS!!!!👏🏾🙌🏾"
Reflecting on his time with the Mighty Ducks films during a 2022 interview, Thompson attributed his passion for hockey to his involvement in the series. Disney famously launched the NHL’s Anaheim Ducks in the 1990s, following the success of the first film.
"It’s always been super-duper love. Hockey fans can get a little rowdy after the game, but they just want to shout out The Mighty Ducks and tell me how much they meant to them," Thompson explained. "It’s always been a lot of love."
Regarding Mighty Ducks 4, Emilio Estevez recently mentioned on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he had written a feature script for the movie, which Disney chose not to pursue. Estevez expressed a desire to rectify past issues with the Game Changers series, stating, "I wanted to make up for all of the disasters that happened."
Estevez, who portrayed Coach Gordon Bombay in the original trilogy, reprised his role in the recent Disney+ series The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers. However, he departed from the series during its second season due to conflicts over a vaccine mandate.
The script for Mighty Ducks 4 featured a storyline where Coach Bombay returns to guide a new team in the professional women’s hockey league, emphasizing an all-girl team dynamic. "It was charming, contemporary, and cool," Estevez remarked, adding, "Disney was like, ‘We don’t want to pursue that.’"
