Anticipation lingers for a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters, but according to its creators, fans may need to wait. “There’s so many ways we can take it, but honestly, we haven’t had any time to really think about anything,” said writer-director Maggie Kang during an exclusive interview at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards on January 6.
“Our creative brains are sitting on a couch,” added 45-year-old Kang, humorously suggesting that, despite being present, their minds are still collecting ideas. “Even though our bodies are here.”

No official sequel announcement has been made, though a report from Bloomberg in November 2025 indicated that Netflix and Sony are collaborating to release one in 2029. Since its June 2025 debut, KPop Demon Hunters has emerged as a cultural phenomenon, becoming the most-watched animated movie on Netflix and achieving significant chart success with its songs.
The animated feature is recognized for its excellence at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards, where it was nominated for Best Animated Film. Kang, Appelhans, and producer Michelle Wong consider this honor to be “incredible.”

Wong praised her collaborators for their determination. “I’m really proud that especially Maggie and Chris really stuck to their guns, dedicated themselves to making the movie they wanted,” she said. “I’m hopeful that it gives a platform for other directors and studios to embrace new material and new ideas because I believe that our industry needs that right now.”
Recently, KPop Demon Hunters received accolades for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “Golden” at both the Critics Choice Awards and the Golden Globes. The film’s soundtrack has also garnered five nominations at the upcoming Grammy Awards on February 1.
KPop Demon Hunters is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
