Hudson Williams from ‘Heated Rivalry’ Joins Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at an Ottawa Gala
Hudson Williams and Mark Carney Celebrate Success of Heated Rivalry at CMPA Conference
Hudson Williams, a breakout star of the hit series Heated Rivalry, experienced a memorable moment with Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney at the Canadian Media Producers Association’s (CMPA) annual Prime Time conference in Ottawa.
The encounter took place on the red carpet, where Williams and Carney shared a light-hearted exchange, celebrating the unexpected global success of the show. Following a series of photographs, Williams helped Carney don a white fleece jacket, playfully wrapping his leg around the Prime Minister as photographers captured the moment. A CBC clip showcased Carney prompting Williams to "do the leg thing," which added to the jovial atmosphere.
During the conference, Carney conversed with Heated Rivalry star Sophie Nélisse, creators Jacob Tierney and Brendan Brady, as well as Sean Cohan, President of Bell Media, the network that commissioned the ice hockey drama.
Carney later delivered a surprise address to the Prime Time delegates, applauding Tierney and Brady for resisting pressure from U.S. executives to dilute the show’s more explicit content during its development. He remarked, “What’s the point in that? Jacob did the right thing. He did the smart thing. He came home to Canada. He came home to a nation that celebrates what makes us different.”
Expressing his admiration for the creators, Carney added, “Congratulations on creating a story that has struck a chord with so many across this country, around the world. Because of you, cottage season will have a whole new meaning this summer.”
Heated Rivalry features Williams and Connor Storie as competitive professional ice hockey players whose rivalry conceals a deeper bond that blossoms into a joyful relationship. The series, which made its way onto HBO Max in the U.S. and other territories, has garnered significant attention, propelling its stars into the public eye.
Carney, who mentioned he has watched five episodes of the series, praised its characters and storyline for challenging traditional notions of masculinity. “They’re also two young men who are terrified of being their fullest selves, and we live in an increasingly dangerous, divided, and intolerant world, and the hard-fought rights of the 2SLGBTQ+ community are under threat,” he stated.
As Heated Rivalry gears up for a second season, Tierney continues to write new scripts. Season 1 is available for streaming on various platforms, including Crave in Canada and HBO Max in the U.S.
The event also featured several moments capturing the camaraderie among the attendees, as illustrated in images from the conference.
