Reel Suspects Brings Exciting Hong Kong Esports Drama ‘Gamer Girls’ to Rotterdam
Paris-Based Reel Suspects Acquires ‘Gamer Girls’ Ahead of Rotterdam Premiere
Reel Suspects, the Paris-based distributor known for its focus on genre cinema, has secured the rights to the esports drama Gamer Girls, directed by Hong Kong filmmakers Veronica Bassetto and Sophie Yang. The film is set to debut at the Rotterdam International Film Festival next week.
The narrative centers on the recently disbanded all-girls esports team, Dollhouse, who come together to launch a comeback as Gamer Girls. Their mission, however, faces setbacks when the local gaming authority suspends all player accounts in Hong Kong just weeks before a crucial tournament qualifying round. As the teammates work to restore their accounts, they forge unexpected alliances along the way.
Crafted within a gaming universe envisioned by Bassetto, Gamer Girls explores the personal struggles of young people in Hong Kong and highlights how video games provide them with a sense of empowerment in the virtual realm.
Produced by Jacqueline Liu, known for her recent projects including Valley of the Shadow of Death and The Way We Talk, which won co-star Suet-Ying Chung the Best Actress award at the 2024 Golden Horse Awards, the film features a dynamic ensemble cast of Hong Kong actresses and influencers. The cast includes Angela Yuen Summer, Alma Kwok Lilith, Sabrina Cheung Raven, Ng Wing Sze Kaki, Jeannie Ng Miko, and CY Chan Login.
Matteo Lovadina, CEO of Reel Suspects, praised the film, stating, “Gamer Girls is an entertaining and empowering esports debut feature with very accomplished cinematic aesthetics. Due to the ever-growing interest in esports, we feel that audiences will be captivated by this topic, which remains relatively unexplored in cinema.”
Reel Suspects plans to begin international sales for the film at the upcoming European Film Market, alongside other projects, including the Brazilian vampire romance Love Kills directed by Luiza Schelling Tubaldini and the Portuguese body horror debut Bodyhackers by Carlos Conceição.
