Amber Heard Discusses Legal Battles in New Documentary
Amber Heard has made rare comments regarding her legal struggles with ex-husband Johnny Depp in the new documentary Silenced, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 24.
In her reflections, the 39-year-old actress expressed a profound sense of disempowerment, stating, "I have lost my ability to speak. I am not here to tell my story. I don’t want to tell my story. In fact, I don’t want to use my voice anymore," the documentary reveals.
Heard and Depp have been embroiled in a contentious legal battle since their divorce, with both parties facing allegations of abuse. The film, directed by Selina Miles, highlights the misuse of defamation laws against abuse survivors, a theme particularly pertinent given Heard’s high-profile defamation trials with Depp.
"This is not about me," she continues in the documentary, emphasizing the broader implications of her experiences. "That’s the problem."

International human rights lawyer Jennifer Robinson, who supported Heard during her legal confrontations with Depp, also appears in the documentary. Reflecting on her experiences, Heard recounted a pivotal moment when she considered speaking to the press during The Sun trial. "I didn’t understand it could get so much worse for me as a woman, using my voice."
According to the Sundance Film Festival website, Silenced also features stories from other women fighting for justice, including Catalina Ruiz-Navarro in Colombia and Brittany Higgins in Australia. The documentary underscores the notion that "when women speak out, powerful systems move to discredit and punish them."
Heard shared her inspiration from other women’s courage, stating, "It gives me strength seeing other people take on the fight. Women brave enough to address the imbalance of power… I believe it can be better."
Following her separation from Depp in 2016, Heard cited irreconcilable differences and filed a temporary restraining order amid domestic violence allegations. The divorce settlement reached in August of that year totaled $7 million.
However, Depp subsequently sued Heard for defamation in March 2019 over an op-ed she published in The Washington Post. The legal saga continued as Depp lost his libel case against The Sun in 2020, with the court deeming the publication’s allegations "substantially true." The month-long defamation trial in 2022 resulted in Heard being found liable for defamation, ordered to pay $10.35 million in damages, while Depp was directed to pay $2 million in her countersuit.
In a recent settlement, both parties agreed to a sum of $1 million, which Depp plans to donate to charity.

As the legal proceedings continue to captivate public attention, Silenced adds another layer to the ongoing conversation about abuse, defamation, and the power dynamics surrounding women who dare to speak out against powerful figures.
