The celebrated cast of Stand By Me reflects on their deep bond and the film’s influence as they embark on a national tour to commemorate its 40th anniversary. Jerry O’Connell, Wil Wheaton, and Corey Feldman recently spoke about their experiences and the profound impact the film has had on their lives and careers.
The 1986 film follows a group of friends on a life-changing adventure, a portrayal that resonates with audiences even decades later. In celebration of its anniversary, O’Connell, Wheaton, and Feldman are visiting cities across the country, revisiting the film and engaging with fans about the making of this cherished coming-of-age story.
In discussing director Rob Reiner’s influence, Wheaton emphasized the care and support he provided during the film’s production. “I read the book as soon as I found out I was cast in the movie, and I loved it. I recently reread it, and it’s such a different novella than the movie. The novella is very sad and dark, as it represents a man’s struggle to find the words to express his appreciation for his friends. The film adapts that but softens the message, making it nostalgic and universally relatable,” Wheaton stated, referencing Stephen King’s novella, The Body.
Wheaton further expressed his commitment to the role, stating, “When I got to the set, I came in with this desire to live up to the material. I just thought adapting a novella is serious work, like, ‘This is how careers are made.’ I took it seriously and felt validated by Rob Reiner every day on set.” He added that Reiner provided a nurturing environment where the young cast could explore their characters naturally.
Reflecting on the collaborative spirit of the cast, Wheaton noted, “We all knew we were doing something special. I have not worked on anything since that carried that same sense of meaning and connection. We all felt it.”

Echoing Wheaton’s sentiments, Feldman shared feelings of excitement and depth regarding his character: “This script and character had such depth, a welcome change from my earlier roles. It was important for me to embrace the challenge and contribute to a character that felt alive.” He emphasized the privilege of having Reiner as a mentor, noting that his guidance was crucial in navigating character development at a young age.
Feldman also recounted bonding with his co-stars during filming. “We were all the same age, experiencing a summer together that would shape us. Despite our different paths, having shared experiences made us feel like a family,” he noted.

O’Connell shared how the experience of doing Stand By Me helped him understand and embrace his own personality. “I was always the hyperactive kid, often getting into trouble at school. But this film changed my life in ways I never anticipated,” he reflected. On his first day of shooting, he recalled ad-libbing during a scene, only to receive encouragement from Reiner to keep going, a moment that he believes helped shape his future.
As they embark on the national tour, the cast members have expressed a desire to honor River Phoenix, who tragically passed away in 1993. “It was touching that we independently agreed to remember him during this tour,” Wheaton remarked. “It’s going to be emotional not having him with us, but we want to pay tribute to him in a meaningful way,” added O’Connell.

Feldman emphasized the importance of reuniting and honoring their shared experiences, saying, “To reflect on our journey after 40 years together feels miraculous. Few people can say they have maintained respect and camaraderie after so much time. It’s a remarkable opportunity to reconnect and share this experience.”
