Nicole Richie recently reflected on a notable beauty trend from her adolescence that has remained close to her heart. During an exclusive conversation with PEOPLE at the U.S. debut celebration of the Australian makeup brand Nude by Nature in West Hollywood on January 14, the 44-year-old star opened up about her teenage beauty inspirations.

“This is not going to be a popular one, but when I was probably 19, I would draw the Twiggy eyelashes with eyeliner on my under eyes because I love her and just thought that it was fun,” Richie stated. She further added, “I think especially when you’re young, to play with those different looks is so fun and important and you should do it. You should go there.”

Twiggy, a defining figure in the fashion realm of the 1960s, is widely recognized for her striking eye makeup, particularly her distinguished clustered bottom lashes. In a 2022 interview, she expressed her fondness for the look she adopted at the age of 16, which required an impressive one and a half hours to apply.

As Richie evolved in her beauty routine, she has shifted towards a minimalist approach. She mentioned, “I don’t wear a lot of makeup in general because I have very sensitive skin. So the more I do, the more I break out. Using a brand like Nude by Nature is just amazing and keeps my skin calm. It feels very clean.”

In her daily routine, Richie typically opts for “moisturizer and concealer” unless an event calls for a more glamorous look.

Richie’s 18-year-old daughter, who now goes by her middle name, Kate, is currently exploring her own beauty style. “She’s young, and so I’m always like telling her, ‘Go for it. Do all the things,’” Richie said. “I mean, she loves makeup. She loves eyelashes and eyeshadow eyeliners. She loves all of it.”

Although it remains uncertain if Kate has experimented with her mother’s Twiggy-inspired looks, Richie has indicated that the two frequently share clothing.

In a past interview, Richie mentioned the “open closet policy” within her family, enabling an easy exchange of clothes among them. “We have a real easy back-and-forth with each other’s closets,” she explained, appreciating the pristine condition in which her daughter maintains her wardrobe.
