OnlyFans creator Sophie Rain has voiced her opposition to a proposed “sin tax” aimed at adult models by James Fishback, a Republican candidate for Florida governor. The tax would impose a hefty 50% levy on all OnlyFans income, a move Fishback claims would help fund public education and deter certain behaviors associated with adult content.
Fishback, who is an underdog in the 2026 GOP primary, stated that the tax is intended to discourage what he describes as “online degeneracy.” “It is called a ‘sin tax’ because it is a sin, number one, but the purpose of the sin tax in economics is to disincentivize and deter a behavior,” he explained. Fishback expressed concerns about the impact of adult content on young people, suggesting it could lead to negative social outcomes.
In response, Rain criticized Fishback’s proposal, calling it “the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard of.” She questioned the rationale, asking, “How do you charge a sin tax to a Christian who hasn’t sinned?” She asserted her autonomy as a creator, stating, “No one ever forced me to start an OnlyFans, it was MY decision.”
Rain further expressed discontent with Fishback’s focus on her, insinuating that he is seeking attention by targeting public figures like herself. “He is focusing on me because he needs the attention he can get at this point, which, honestly is sad if you think about it,” she added.
Notably, Rain also challenged the fairness of the proposed legislation, questioning why the tax targets creators rather than subscribers. “Florida is OnlyFans central. You are just going to drive them out of the state,” she cautioned.
Fishback has claimed that the proposed sin tax could raise approximately $200 million, which he says would be used to improve public school wages and lunch quality. However, experts have raised concerns about the practicality of enforcing a tax on independent contractors like OnlyFans creators, suggesting that the administrative complexities of seizing 50% of their income could be significant.
As of now, Fishback has not provided a draft of the legislation nor detailed how the enforcement would work. The discussions around this proposal indicate a growing tension within the political landscape surrounding adult content and its regulation.
