Cal McMau and Bill Dubuque Collaborate with Hunter Andrews on New Netflix True Crime Film ‘The Brotherhood’ with Rideback Producing
Netflix Taps Cal McMau to Direct True-Crime Adaptation ‘The Brotherhood’
Netflix has appointed Cal McMau, known for his work on Wasteman, to helm the feature film The Brotherhood. This project is based on the gripping 2006 true-crime book The Brotherhoods: The True Story of Two Cops Who Murdered for the Mafia, authored by Guy Lawson and William Oldham.
The screenplay is crafted by Bill Dubuque, recognized for Ozark, along with his collaborator Hunter Andrews from Wasteman. The film narrates a shocking tale of a young New York City detective in the late 1980s, who unravels a conspiracy connecting remnants of the notorious Mafia Five Families with high-ranking police officials.
Producers Jonathan Eirich of Rideback and Mark Bauch of One Day’s Walk are onboard, with Nick Reynolds from Rideback serving as executive producer. The film has been in development for some time and transitioned to Netflix from Warner Bros. about a year ago. The screenplay by Dubuque has reportedly attracted considerable interest within the industry, with updates on casting anticipated.
McMau’s recent work includes his feature debut, Wasteman, a crime thriller starring David Jonsson and Tom Blyth that premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year. In this film, Jonsson portrays Taylor, whose aspirations for a fresh start are threatened by the arrival of his cellmate Dee, played by Blyth. The film explores themes of loyalty and personal sacrifice, culminating in Taylor facing a critical decision about his future. Wasteman received five nominations at the British Independent Film Awards, with McMau recognized as Best Debut Director.
Before venturing into feature films, McMau built a career as an artist and director in animation and motion graphics for television. Over the past 15 years, he has become a prolific music video director while also creating award-winning short films, culminating in the development of his debut feature script.
Bill Dubuque, a three-time Emmy nominee and creator of the hit Netflix series Ozark, has an impressive filmography, including the Accountant films starring Ben Affleck. The sequel recently garnered over $103 million globally, establishing itself as Amazon MGM Studios’ second-most-watched film on its streaming platform. Dubuque is set to reunite with director Gavin O’Connor on the upcoming film Running, which he penned for Apple.
Adding to Rideback’s impressive lineup, their next feature is the Netflix Bollywood comedy Best of the Best, featuring Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and Priyanka Kedia.
Both McMau and Dubuque are represented by WME, while McMau is also represented by Curtis Brown Group and Ziffren Brittenham. Lawson and Oldham secured representation in the deal through Hotchkiss Daily & Associates.
