Busy Philipps Shares Kevin Williams’ Apology for Her Absence in the ‘Dawson’s Creek’ Finale
More than two decades after the fact, Busy Philipps has received a long-awaited apology regarding her character Audrey from Dawson’s Creek. During a recent cast reunion held in September, Kevin Williamson, the show’s creator, expressed regret for excluding her character from the series finale, which aired in 2003.
Philipps shared her experience during an episode of the Pod Meets World podcast, explaining that she had joined the show in its fifth season. "What I heard at the time was Kevin was like, ‘I don’t know this character. I didn’t create her, so she’s not going to be in the finale,’" she noted. Williamson had returned to write the two-hour finale after stepping away from the series earlier in its run.
Philipps reflected on the impact of his decision, stating, “It was a thing that really hurt my feelings and I felt like I had given two seasons of my life to this show. People really loved my character. I really gave up a big part of my life to be in Wilmington.”
At the reunion, which included co-stars and a table read benefiting James Van Der Beek amidst his cancer battle, she detailed Williamson’s apology: “He was just like, ‘I was just in a moment in my career, my life, when like I had so many things going on. They had asked me at the very last minute to come back and write the finale. I had like a day and a half to do it, and I just made this kind of weird decision and I could have done better and I didn’t, and I’m sorry.’”
Dawson’s Creek premiered in 1998 and ran for six seasons on The WB, concluding with its finale in May 2003.
