Idris Elba, Ellie Goulding, and Cynthia Erivo are among the prominent figures in entertainment and music recognized in the U.K.’s New Year Honors List.
The King’s annual honors acknowledge individuals from various sectors of British society, conferring knighthoods, damehoods, and orders such as CBEs (Commanders), OBEs (Officers), and MBEs (Members). This year, a total of 1,157 recipients from politics, sports, entertainment, science, and other fields have been honored.
Elba was awarded a knighthood in the list revealed on Tuesday, December 30, earning the title of Sir Idris Elba. This honor recognizes his extensive charity work, particularly initiatives aimed at youth, including an anti-knife crime campaign and the establishment of the Elba Hope Foundation, which provides grants to organizations in the UK, the US, and Africa.
Having benefited from the Prince’s Trust as a teenager, Elba received a £1,500 grant to attend the National Youth Music Theatre program. He later gained fame as an actor in acclaimed TV series such as The Wire and Luther, while also achieving recognition as a musician and DJ, performing at festivals worldwide.
Cynthia Erivo and Ellie Goulding also received honors, with both being awarded MBEs. Erivo is lauded for her contributions to drama and the arts, while Goulding’s recognition stems from her commitment to biodiversity and climate issues, having collaborated with the UN as a global environmental ambassador.
Max Richter was honored with a CBE shortly before the release of his original score for the Oscar-nominated film Hamnet, directed by Chloe Zhao and featuring Paul Mescal. Scottish artist Eve Graham received an MBE for her contributions to the music industry, known for her role as a founding member of The New Seekers and a global hit with the 1972 rendition of “I’d Like To Teach The World To Sing.”
Additional industry honorees include Karen Ruth Emanuel, founder and CEO of Key Production Group, who received an OBE for her contributions to music; Philip Patterson, former sector specialist at the Department for Business and Trade, awarded an OBE for his support of the music industry; and Janet Fischer, chair of Live Music Now, honored with an MBE for her services to music and charity.
