Tray Chaney from ‘The Wire’ and His Son Malachi Share Their Journey in a Documentary About the Tornado That Changed Their Lives
Exclusive: Tray Chaney and Son Document Tornado Aftermath in Upcoming Film
Tray Chaney, known for his role as Malik ‘Poot’ Carr in HBO’s acclaimed series The Wire, is collaborating with his son, Malachi, to produce an indie documentary titled Reborn By the Storm. The film focuses on the catastrophic EF-2 tornado that devastated their Georgia home earlier this year.
The tornado struck in May, leaving significant destruction in its wake and critically injuring 18-year-old Malachi, who was hurled hundreds of feet into nearby woods. The Chaneys are serving as executive producers for the documentary, which aims to capture the profound impact of the disaster on their family.
Produced by Chaney Vision Entertainment and edited by Luis A. Garcia of Wise Minds Films, the documentary is slated to begin screenings in May 2026, marking a year since the tragic event.
The film will feature intimate interviews with the Chaney family while showcasing Malachi’s remarkable recovery. Just three weeks post-incident, he was walking again and eager to return to college despite suffering a traumatic brain injury, broken ribs, and facial fractures. Tray Chaney referred to his son as a “walking miracle” in light of Malachi’s progress.
Following the tornado, Tray Chaney shared his experiences in various interviews with major networks including CNN, Fox, and Good Morning America. The family has received an outpouring of support from friends and fellow actors, including Kenan Thompson, Shaquille O’Neal, Will Packer, and Kevin Hart, as well as cast members from The Wire. Felicia Pearson, who portrayed Snoop in the series, was among those who visited Malachi in the hospital shortly after the incident.
Previously, Chaney had been engaged in a project to interview every living cast member of The Wire, producing a YouTube series titled Live From the Pit. This series featured discussions with actors such as Michael K. Williams and Anwan Glover about the series that has been widely praised as one of the greatest television shows of all time.
Tray Chaney is currently represented by J Pervis Talent.
