Paul King Will Direct the New Sony Movie ‘Labubu’
Paul King Set to Direct Live-Action ‘Labubu’ Film for Sony Pictures and Pop Mart
Paul King has been tapped to develop and direct a live-action film adaptation of Labubu in collaboration with Sony Pictures and Pop Mart. Currently in the early stages of development, King will also serve as a producer alongside Department M and Wenxin She.
Labubu first emerged a decade ago through a picture book series, providing a deep narrative foundation that predates its toy and lifestyle expansions. The characters were created by Kasing Lung, a Hong Kong-born artist who moved to the Netherlands as a child. Lung’s experiences and love for folklore significantly influenced the Monsters series.
King is known for his recent work directing the Warner Bros. and Roald Dahl Story Company’s Wonka, which starred Timothée Chalamet and grossed $635 million worldwide. He previously directed the Paddington films, both of which were critical and commercial successes, earning a combined total of nearly $500 million globally. King also co-wrote the screenplay for and serves as an executive producer on the third installment of the Paddington series.
The Hollywood Reporter was the first to break the news of King’s involvement in this exciting new project.
