Los Angeles Marathon Set for March 8: Key Details and Impacts
LOS ANGELES – The 41st Los Angeles Marathon will take place this Sunday, March 8, starting at 7 a.m. at Dodger Stadium and concluding in Century City. The event is anticipated to attract over 27,000 runners, leading to rolling road closures throughout downtown Los Angeles, Hollywood, and West Hollywood, commencing as early as 3 a.m.
The marathon coincides with the start of Daylight Saving Time, which begins at 2 a.m., resulting in participants losing an hour of sleep before the race.
Event Overview
This year’s marathon, themed "Stadium to the Stars," will feature a 26.2-mile course that leads runners through iconic neighborhoods such as Chinatown, Little Tokyo, Echo Park, Hollywood, and Beverly Hills. Runners will officially begin at 7 a.m.; however, wheelchair and hand-cycle participants will start earlier at 6:30 a.m.
Historical Context
Established in 1986, the Los Angeles Marathon has evolved into one of the largest races in the United States, initially inspired by the successful 1984 Summer Olympics. Formerly known for its "Stadium to the Sea" route, the marathon transitioned to its current course in 2021.
Course Highlights
The route starts at Dodger Stadium and includes landmarks such as City Hall, the Walt Disney Concert Hall, and the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Notably, the course includes a "double-back" section in the final miles, differing from previous routes that ended at Santa Monica Pier.
Traffic and Road Closures
As the marathon progresses on Sunday, major roads—including segments of Sunset Boulevard, Hollywood Boulevard, and Santa Monica Boulevard—will face significant closures. While most surface streets are expected to reopen by early evening, freeway ramps at the 101, 110, and 405 freeways should be clear by 3 p.m.
Those traveling through the area should prepare for delays and are advised to plan alternative routes when necessary.
Participant Logistics
Marathon officials recommend parking in Century City and utilizing free shuttles to the start line. For those being dropped off, access to Dodger Stadium will be through the Golden State Gate. Due to expected heavy traffic, participants are encouraged to arrive at least 90 minutes before their start time.
Post-Race Activities
After crossing the finish line in Century City, participants will enter the Finish Festival, which will offer finisher medals, refreshments, and various activities until 3 p.m. Several post-race celebrations are also planned throughout the city for runners wishing to continue the festivities.
This Sunday promises to be a dynamic event for both participants and spectators, showcasing the vibrancy of Los Angeles while presenting logistical challenges given the expected turnout and street closures.
