Yoshinobu Yamamoto Celebrates His Role as Opening Day Starter
Yamamoto to Start Opening Day for Dodgers
Yoshinobu Yamamoto has been named the opening day starter for the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2026 season, marking a significant moment in his career. This decision comes as the team embarks on its pursuit of a third consecutive championship, a challenge that resonates deeply with Yamamoto.
“It’s an honor for me,” said Yamamoto during a press conference on Tuesday, through interpreter Yoshihiro Sonoda. “And then it’s opening day at a Dodger Stadium home game, and that’s very much an honor to me. I also feel the responsibility.”
Yamamoto is scheduled to make one final Cactus League appearance against the Padres this Friday, ahead of his start next Thursday against the Arizona Diamondbacks. This will be his second opening day start in Major League Baseball, and notably, his first at home.
The upcoming season follows a demanding offseason and spring training for Yamamoto, who not only handled a rigorous postseason schedule but also participated in the World Baseball Classic for Team Japan.
“It’s hard to put into words,” commented Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. “He is just very driven and very disciplined in his work. That’s what allows him to compete at a high level. Where most people would feel that you win the World Series MVP, you don’t have enough to pitch in the WBC. He wanted to pitch for his country, and now he’s really excited about the start of 2026.”
Roberts expressed gratitude for having Yamamoto on the team, emphasizing his determination: “He is a very determined person. We’re just lucky he’s on our team.”
