Yorgos Lanthimos Shares His Artistic Journey in the New Photobook ‘VISCIN’ and Athens Exhibition
Acclaimed filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos, known for his unique approach to storytelling and examination of human relationships, has recently shifted his focus to photography. In conjunction with a prominent exhibition at Athens’ Onassis Stegi, Lanthimos collaborates with MACK Books to debut VISCIN, a captivating artist’s book created on the set of his upcoming feature film, Bugonia.
VISCIN showcases a collection of images taken spontaneously between film scenes, offering a narrative that exists outside the parameters of conventional filmmaking. Utilizing unconventional compositions, surreal portraiture, and striking landscapes, Lanthimos crafts a visual story exploring themes of mystery, illusion, death, and renewal.
The physical format of VISCIN aligns with Lanthimos’ innovative vision. Designed with an accordion—or leporello—fold, the book emulates the unfolding of a film reel. As readers navigate through its pages, they experience a transformation from stark black-and-white imagery to vibrant color, encapsulating a journey of foreboding and rebirth.
The unveiling of VISCIN coincides with the exhibition “Yorgos Lanthimos: Photographs,” currently showing at Onassis Stegi. Curated by Michael Mack and organized by Onassis Stegi, this expansive exhibit offers insight into Lanthimos’ flourishing body of photographic work, featuring 182 still images captured over the last five years.
The exhibition includes selections from his previous publications with MACK, such as Dear God, the Parthenon Is Still Broken, taken alongside the 2023 film Poor Things, and i shall sing these songs beautifully, from the 2024 release Kinds of Kindness. It also features never-before-seen images from the new VISCIN series.
The exhibition runs from March 7, 2026, to May 17, 2026, showcasing Lanthimos’ evolving photographic narrative. VISCIN will be available in 2026, published by MACK.
