Wunmi Mosaku Joins Joan Iyiola’s Short Film ‘Mango’ as Executive Producer
Wunmi Mosaku, known for her recent nomination in the BAFTA Film Award longlist for her performance in Sinners, has been appointed as an executive producer for Joan Iyiola’s short film Mango. The film, which merges live-action with body horror elements, is set to premiere on Disney+ across Europe.
Written and directed by Iyiola in her directorial debut, Mango tells the story of Zadie, a successful florist in London grappling with fibroids—benign tumors that can form in the uterine wall. Despite being reassured by medical professionals that her condition is common and manageable, Zadie finds herself in a dire pursuit for help as her body undergoes unsettling changes.
Olivia Nakintu, of Better fame, portrays Zadie, while the cast includes Danny Sapani (Black Panther) in the role of Zadie’s father and Paul Chahidi (The Night Manager 2) as a medical expert. After its premiere at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival this February, the film will become available for streaming.
Iyiola, a recipient of the HBO Short Film Award for Dọlápọ̀ Is Fine, recently opened up about her personal experiences with fibroids in an article for Vogue. This condition impacts millions of women globally, garnering increased attention from figures like Lupita Nyong’o and tennis superstar Venus Williams.
“Mango is a visceral and urgently needed film,” Mosaku stated. “Joan Iyiola turns the long-dismissed reality of women’s experiences with fibroids into a poetic and powerful story. Her voice is striking, full of bravery and humanity. I’m honored to support this award-winning film as it reaches a wider audience and helps transform how we understand fibroids worldwide.”
Expressing her appreciation for Mosaku’s involvement, Iyiola remarked, “We are honored to have Mango supported by Wunmi Mosaku. Her belief in the film and advocacy as it reaches wider audiences are incredibly powerful, affirming our mission to seek change for women suffering with fibroids.”
Mango is produced by Apatan Productions, co-founded by Iyiola, in collaboration with Salaud Morisset. Mosaku joins an executive team that includes Joy Gharoro-Akpojotor (Dreamers), Thomas Hawkins (Animol), Elisabeth Hopper (Netflix Talent Fund), Joe Bell (Dọlápọ̀ Is Fine), and Dr. Christine Ekechi.
