Writers and Directors Share Their Journey from Short Film to Feature: The Story Behind “A Weird Little Guy” at SXSW Studio
Film Review: Midnighter
Directors/Screenwriters: Matt Black and Ryan Polly
Premiere Date: Thursday, March 12, 2026
In the atmospheric thriller Midnighter, a social media moderator confronts a terrifying situation after she declines to publish a mysterious video. This decision sets off a chain of events that leads to deadly consequences, elevating the stakes in a chilling exploration of modern digital dilemmas.
During a recent panel, directors Matt Black and Ryan Polly shared insights into the film’s creative process, particularly the evolution of its titular creature. “The monster itself, in the short film, it really was just like, ‘We need a scary monster.’ Matt’s brother made a mask, and we had that. It was very simple in the short film, then it came to the feature [and] we had the ability to really, actually try to develop something that’s interesting and related to the themes of our movie,” Polly explained.
Black added further context about the film’s eerie antagonist, noting, “Our monster is maybe a spoiler, but we just call [him] a weird little guy. He’s a weird little guy, not so much as a monster. He’s just a weird little guy. And we find that to be creepy enough.”
Midnighter promises to be a significant exploration of themes surrounding the impact of social media on personal safety and the unforeseen consequences of digital choice. With its compelling narrative and character-driven horror, the film seeks to captivate audiences and provoke thought long after the credits roll.
