Why Queen Elizabeth Preferred William and Kate’s Wedding Over Charles and Diana’s
Royal biographer Tina Brown has revealed that Queen Elizabeth II expressed greater satisfaction with the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton than she did with the marriage of her eldest son, Prince Charles, and Lady Diana Spencer.
According to Brown, a pivotal factor in the Queen’s feelings was the age difference between the brides. When Kate wed in 2011, she was 29 years old, in contrast to Diana, who was just 20 at her wedding in 1981. The Queen reportedly displayed a level of joy on William and Kate’s wedding day that was “uncharacteristically overjoyed,” as noted in a report by People.
On April 29, 2011, as the royal couple tied the knot at Westminster Abbey, Queen Elizabeth donned a bright yellow ensemble, a reflection of her upbeat mood on the historic day.
Reports indicate that the Queen’s sentiments toward William and Kate’s wedding were notably more positive than those expressed during Charles and Diana’s nuptials three decades earlier. Kate’s age and the couple’s nearly decade-long relationship prior to their marriage appeared to contribute to the Queen’s approval. In contrast, Charles and Diana had little familiarity with one another at the time of their wedding.
In her 2022 book The Palace Papers, Tina Brown emphasizes that Kate’s experience and maturity differentiated her from Diana, describing her as “road-tested in resilience as well as royal life.” This insight underscores the Queen’s lessons learned from the challenges surrounding her eldest son’s marriage.
While Diana faced significant challenges with little guidance in her transition to royal life, it seems the Queen applied these lessons when it came to preparing Kate for her royal role. Following William and Kate’s vows, the Queen turned to her husband, Prince Philip, remarking, “That was really excellent, wasn’t it?”
As the day unfolded, the Queen was reportedly more emotional than anticipated, feeling secure in the continuity of the royal lineage. A royal source conveyed that the Queen’s supportive words to Kate helped bolster her confidence in her new role.
