When Can We Expect Rain in Los Angeles?
Severe Weather Threatens Los Angeles During Christmas Week
LOS ANGELES – A significant storm system is set to impact Southern California during the holiday season, raising concerns about flooding and potential mudslides.
The weather system, commonly referred to as the Pineapple Express, is expected to bring heavy rainfall to the region, with the first waves of precipitation arriving this week. According to Chief Meteorologist Adam Krueger, Angelenos could see up to a quarter-inch of rain on Monday evening.
A flood watch is scheduled to take effect on Tuesday afternoon and remain in place until Wednesday evening. Tuesday will begin with light rain, but it is anticipated that conditions will worsen overnight, leading to several inches of rain by Wednesday.
Key Weather Timeline:
- Monday, December 22: Up to a quarter-inch of rain expected in the evening.
- Tuesday, December 23: Light rain in the morning, transitioning to heavy downpours overnight.
- Wednesday, December 24 (Christmas Eve): Predicted to be the peak of the storm, with up to four inches of rain possible. Certain foothill and mountain regions may experience even greater amounts. Krueger cautioned, “A big batch is coming through here, and it’s not just that we’re talking heavy rain; there could be some hail, strong winds, and even a brief tornado cannot be ruled out on Wednesday.”
- Thursday, December 25 (Christmas Day): A second wave of rain may bring an additional one to two inches.
- Friday, December 26: Some light rain may persist, although conditions are expected to improve over the weekend.
While the forecast presents challenges, Krueger noted that “the good news is this weekend we will be drying out.” Residents are advised to prepare for the severe weather as the holiday approaches, taking precautions against potential flooding and mudslides.
