What’s Next for the Old Amoeba Music Building?
Bathhouse to Open New Location in Los Angeles in 2028
The former site of Amoeba Music on Sunset Boulevard is set to be transformed into Bathhouse, a health and wellness hub, projected to open in early 2028. This new venture aims to blend social interaction with rejuvenation.
Originally established in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood in 2019, Bathhouse shifts the focus from solitary wellness experiences to communal ones. Typical visits include deep-tissue massages, followed by cold plunges and sauna sessions with friends. Founders Travis Talmadge and Jason Goodman characterize it as the “anti-spa,” and they opened a second location in Manhattan’s Flatiron neighborhood in 2024.
Acknowledging the thriving wellness culture in Los Angeles, Talmadge expressed that the vacant Amoeba Music building provides an ideal foundation for their vision. “We try to design epic spaces, and the bones of the building accommodate our design concepts really well,” he noted in an email. He further emphasized the advantages of the structure’s vast floor plates and high ceilings, which will be utilized to create state-of-the-art saunas and pools. The 30,000-square-foot rooftop will feature a large outdoor area, with views stretching from the Hollywood sign to Santa Monica.
The forthcoming Los Angeles site will be Bathhouse’s largest yet, spanning approximately 85,000 square feet. It will include seven saunas and steam rooms—one designed for around 250 individuals—along with about ten thermal pools. The facility’s all-day hours will be complemented by a beverage program and concessions on the expansive rooftop.
Talmadge highlighted the value of shared experiences in wellness settings. “Community is kind of a wonderful byproduct of the experience, but it’s not something we try and force,” he stated. “’Bathhousing’ is about as fundamental of a human experience as you can have.” According to him, the combination of heat, cold, and socializing facilitates a shared human experience among patrons.
As Bathhouse gears up for its Los Angeles launch, the emphasis on community-centered wellness looks to redefine traditional spa experiences in one of the city’s most iconic neighborhoods.
