What transpired in Season 3 of The Gilded Age?
In Season 3, Donica’s character, Dr. Kirkland, proposed to Peggy Scott in a joyful moment, contrasting the tumultuous marriage of George and Bertha Russell, which faced challenges as Bertha pushed their daughter Gladys into an arranged marriage. George expressed frustration over the lack of control he had regarding his daughter’s future.
While George was upset about the arranged marriage, Gladys married the Duke of Buckingham and fell in love with him. Bertha’s sister Monica, who attended the wedding, created tension for Bertha.
Simultaneously, Larry Russell courted Marian, although their engagement deteriorated when Larry was caught in a scandalous situation at a brothel. Their relationship nearly ended, but after a string of events, Marian sought to mend their relationship.
Oscar’s secret about his sexuality was exposed to his family in what proved to be a complex situation. While his mother Agnes and aunt Ada avoided directly discussing the matter, he received support from his cousin Marian, who remained unbothered by the revelation.
As Season 3 concluded, George contemplated divorce following a near-fatal incident that changed his outlook on life. Bertha, aware of the societal stigma surrounding divorcees, sought to influence social norms by encouraging acceptance at high-society events.
Lastly, viewers may have seen the last of Ward McAllister as the season wrapped up.
What can we expect in Season 4?
The official logline for Season 4 states, “Bertha Russell changed Society at a cost. Now, her family must reckon with the consequences as Agnes van Rhijn seizes an opportunity to regain her position. Meanwhile, Marian forges a new path for herself, and Peggy works to be accepted by her future in-laws. In this new era, you must be careful what you wish for.”
