What Secrets Are Being Hidden in the BBC’s ‘Crookhaven’ Adaptation Trailer?
EXCLUSIVE: “This is Crookhaven. Everyone’s hiding something.”
The BBC has unveiled an exclusive trailer for its upcoming adaptation of Crookhaven, a high school series with a unique twist, based on the beloved novels by J.J. Arcanjo. The show is set to premiere on March 22.
Starring notable actors including Dougray Scott, Julie Hesmondhalgh, Keith Allen, and breakout star Adolescence’s Amari Bacchus, Crookhaven is set in a secret school designed for young criminals. Here, students, referred to as Crooklings, are trained to hone their skills to promote good and restore balance, justice, and order in the world outside. The trailer offers a glimpse into their world.
The narrative revolves around pickpocketing prodigy Gabriel (Lucas Leach) and his fierce rival, the headmaster’s daughter Penelope (Carmel Laniado). Viewers will follow a diverse group of eight international students competing for the coveted Crooked Cup while facing off against a menacing adversary known as The Nameless.
Filmed in Northern Ireland, the series has been created for television by Justin Young and is highly anticipated by audiences. It hails from the BBC Studios Kids & Family division, which is also responsible for the Oliver Twist spin-off Dodger.
Crookhaven has received support from Northern Ireland Screen. The creative team includes lead writer Tali Walters, executive producer Mark Freeland, and directors Jon East (Killing Eve, Downton Abbey) and Jamie Magnus Stone (Doctor Who). The producer is Leon McGeown-Fee, while Sarah Muller holds the title of Senior Head of BBC Children’s Commissioning 7+, and Amy Buscombe is the Commissioning Editor for the BBC. BBC Studios will manage global sales of the series.
