Spurs Edge Clippers in Close Contest
The San Antonio Spurs narrowly defeated the Los Angeles Clippers 119-115 on Monday night, overcoming an early deficit and withstanding a late rally. This victory marks a significant achievement for the Spurs, as they reached 50 wins for the first time since the 2016-17 season.
Victor Wembanyama led the way for San Antonio with 21 points and 13 rebounds, while Stephon Castle contributed 23 points, along with eight assists and seven rebounds. Devin Vassell also made a notable contribution, scoring 20 points. The Spurs now trail the Western Conference-leading Oklahoma City Thunder by three games.
The Clippers, fighting to secure a spot in the play-in tournament, now find themselves with a .500 record following their second consecutive loss. Star player Kawhi Leonard sat out due to a sprained left knee, leaving a significant gap in the lineup. Darius Garland stepped up, leading the Clippers with 25 points and 10 assists. Jordan Miller added a strong performance off the bench, with 22 points.
As the game progressed, the Spurs built a substantial lead, at one point going up by 24 points. However, the Clippers closed the third quarter with a 16-3 run, narrowing the gap to just 10 points. With under a minute remaining, Garland scored seven of the Clippers’ nine points to draw within four. Still, the Spurs sealed their victory by sinking four consecutive free throws.
The game began with the Clippers jumping to a strong start, achieving a 17-3 lead as the Spurs struggled, missing eight of their first nine shots. However, San Antonio regrouped in the second quarter, erasing a 14-point deficit with a dominant 37-15 performance that propelled them to a 66-52 halftime lead.
