Nick Reiner, 32, is facing two counts of first-degree murder following the deaths of his parents, Rob, 78, and Michele, 70. Prosecutors allege the couple was killed in the early hours of December 14 at their residence.
Three days after the incident, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the victims died from multiple sharp-force injuries and ruled their deaths as homicides.
Approximately six hours after discovering their bodies, Nick was arrested near the University of Southern California. He remains in custody without bail, and an arraignment is scheduled for January 7, 2026. The authorities have yet to disclose a motive.
The day before the killings, reports indicate that Rob and Nick engaged in a “very loud argument” at a party hosted by Conan O’Brien on December 13.
Nick has previously discussed his struggles with addiction and homelessness, issues that began in his teenage years. A source close to the family shared that Rob and Michele “tried everything—giving him space, keeping him close—but his struggles run very deep. It’s every parent’s worst fear.”
Rob and Michele married in 1989 after meeting during the filming of When Harry Met Sally… They had three children: Nick, Jake, and Romy. Rob also adopted a daughter, Tracy, during his marriage to the late Penny Marshall.
In a statement released on December 17, Jake and Romy expressed that the loss of their parents has caused “unimaginable pain” they are experiencing every moment. The siblings requested privacy and extended their gratitude for the public’s condolences.
Rob Reiner is well-known for directing numerous beloved films, including This Is Spinal Tap (1984), Stand by Me (1986), The Princess Bride (1987), When Harry Met Sally… (1989), Misery (1990), and A Few Good Men (1992).
