Weekend Closures on the 405 Freeway: What You Need to Know for December 19-22
Weekend Closures on the 405 Freeway for Paving Work
LOS ANGELES – Drivers traveling through the Sepulveda Pass this weekend should prepare for significant delays as the 405 Freeway will be subject to lane reductions and multiple ramp closures for paving work. The construction is set to begin at 10 p.m. on Friday, December 19, and will continue until 5 a.m. on Monday, December 22.
Caltrans has announced that traffic will be restricted to three lanes in both directions to facilitate the ongoing improvements. Motorists can expect the following changes:
Northbound I-405
- Traffic will be reduced to three lanes from just south of the Getty Center Drive/Sepulveda Boulevard off-ramp to just north of Bel Air Crest Road.
- The Getty Center Drive/Sepulveda Boulevard off-ramp will be closed.
Southbound I-405
- Northbound traffic will also be reduced to three lanes between the Skirball Center Drive/Mulholland Drive on-ramp and the Getty Center Drive/Sepulveda Boulevard on-ramp.
- The Getty Center Drive/Sepulveda Boulevard on- and off-ramps, as well as the Skirball Center Drive/Mulholland Drive on-ramp, will be closed.
Alternate Routes
For drivers seeking alternatives, the following routes are recommended:
- From Sepulveda Boulevard to northbound I-405: Use Sepulveda Boulevard, then travel east/north on Skirball Center Drive to rejoin the freeway.
- From Sepulveda Boulevard to southbound I-405: Take Sepulveda Boulevard, then head south on Church Lane to access the Sunset Boulevard on-ramp.
Broader Context
These closures are part of the $143.7 million I-405 Pavement Rehabilitation Project, aimed at enhancing safety and mobility along the busy corridor between Van Nuys and Westwood. Caltrans officials have noted that there will be extended weekend closures and lane reductions approximately every two weeks along various sections of the freeway.
Residents and businesses in the area may experience disruptions, including noise and vibrations, as the construction progresses. The timetable for closures is subject to change based on weather conditions or operational needs.
