High School Basketball Playoffs: Wednesday’s Results
The latest round of high school basketball playoffs saw intense competition in both city and southern sections, producing several noteworthy outcomes.
City Section Boys Quarterfinals
In Division IV, the eighth-seeded Hawkins pulled off a significant upset, defeating top-ranked East Valley with a score of 76-67. Fifth-seeded San Fernando triumphed over fourth-seeded Gardena, 65-57, while sixth-seeded Angelou defeated third-seeded Bell, 69-55. Second-seeded Franklin dominated seventh-seeded Conteras, winning 76-37.
In Division V, top-seeded Van Nuys secured a win against eighth-seeded Legacy, 69-52. In another surprising twist, twenty-first seeded Camino Nuevo overwhelmed thirteenth-seeded Magnolia Science Academy, 67-40. Nineteenth-seeded Santee narrowly edged out eleventh-seeded Torres, 61-57. Additionally, second-seeded Canoga Park triumphed over seventh-seeded Monroe, 71-58.
The semifinals are set for Friday, with the finals scheduled for February 27 or 28 at a time to be announced.
Southern Section Girls Open Division
In the Open Division, the results from Pool A through D were as follows: Ontario Christian, the top seed, defeated JSerra 84-61 in Pool A. Etiwanda, seeded second, topped seventh-seeded Lakewood St. Joseph 81-59 in Pool B. Sierra Canyon, ranked third, narrowly defeated sixth-seeded Corona Centennial 59-54 in Pool C, while fourth-seeded Sage Hill defeated fifth-seeded Mater Dei 56-45 in Pool D.
Quarterfinals are arranged for Saturday, leading into the semifinals on February 24. The finals will take place at 8 p.m. on February 28 at the Toyota Arena.
Southern Section Girls Quarterfinals Results
In Division 1, Windward barely edged out Ventura, 48-45. Valencia triumphed over Troy, 52-48, while Moreno Valley dominated Orange Lutheran with a 63-41 victory. La Salle emerged victorious against Villa Park, 50-45.
Division 2 saw Saugus defeat Portola, 54-44, and Camarillo beat Summit, 42-38. Crescenta Valley’s 57-42 win over San Clemente and Rosary Academy’s substantial victory against Dos Pueblos, 53-33, rounded out the division.
In Division 3, Murrieta Valley narrowly defeated St. Monica 66-65, while Oxnard confidently overcame Trabuco Hills 64-53. Leuzinger bested Mark Keppel, 53-46, and St. Margaret’s edged out Canyon Country Canyon, 50-47.
Division 4 results showcased La Canada’s commanding 65-37 win against Long Beach Jordan, while Anaheim Canyon defeated Eastside 47-22. El Dorado triumphed over Long Beach Wilson, 42-20. Marina secured victory against Pasadena Poly, 51-47.
In Division 5, Bishop Diego narrowly beat Sunny Hills, 47-45, and Godinez edged out Torrance, 48-46. Oakwood achieved a decisive 55-38 victory against Whitney, while Burbank Burroughs defeated Carter 70-30.
Division 6 featured San Jacinto’s 41-32 win over Immaculate Heart, Savanna’s 45-37 victory against Palm Desert, Hillcrest’s 53-36 triumph over Rowland, and Warren’s narrow 39-35 win against Santa Fe.
In Division 7, Laguna Hills won against Foothill Tech 46-33, while Patriot narrowly defeated Rosemead 38-34. Ridgecrest Burroughs convincingly triumphed over AGBU 52-31, and La Palma Kennedy dominated Cajon 53-20.
Division 8 saw University Prep emerge victorious against Yucca Valley, 45-41. Orange’s commanding 48-20 win over Riverside Notre Dame, Schurr’s 52-34 victory against CAMS, and Chadwick’s narrow win over Santa Monica Pacifica Christian, 53-48, completed the division.
In Division 9, Vista del Lago narrowly defeated Santa Clarita Christian 41-39, while Desert Hot Springs overcame Channel Islands 50-39. La Sierra and Sierra Vista secured wins of 30-20 and 71-34, respectively.
