Vince Gilligan Shares Insights on [SPOILER]’s Guest Appearance and Its Impact on Carol’s Story
John Cena’s Surprise Cameo in Pluribus Episode 6: A Twist in the Plot
Apple TV’s Pluribus continues to impress with a series of unexpected cameos, the latest being John Cena, who makes a surprising appearance in Episode 6, titled “HDP.” Creator Vince Gilligan has referred to Cena’s role as a “non sequitur,” adding to the blend of intrigue and humor that the show is known for.
The episode follows a tense cliffhanger from “Got Milk,” where protagonist Carol, portrayed by Rhea Seehorn, investigates a disturbing discovery of discarded milk cartons. Her investigation leads her to a transformed dairy facility, revealing vacuum-sealed human remains. The acronym “HDP” stands for “human-derived protein,” which Carol must confront as she travels to Las Vegas to meet Mr. Diabaté, played by Samba Schutte. Diabaté, however, is more focused on his own opulent fantasies than on the serious issue at hand.
The narrative escalates when Cena features in a three-minute infomercial, explaining the moral code of the collective responsible for these unsettling circumstances. He emphasizes that the collective cannot harm or kill, a principle that limits their ability to gather food through conventional methods. With approximately 7 million people facing caloric deficits, the collective resorts to producing a shelf-stable liquid comprised of food that is on the verge of spoiling, mixed with 8-12% HDP, created from individuals who die from natural causes.
“We cherish the memory of these people and appreciate their sacrifice,” Cena states sincerely, noting the collective’s ambivalence toward cannibalism. He reassures Carol that she will never be required to consume HDP, concluding the message with an oddly comforting tone.
Reflecting on Cena’s involvement, Gilligan remarked, “He was just the coolest guy,” highlighting his personality’s fit for delivering such a bizarre yet crucial message to the audience. Gilligan emphasized, “It’s such a non sequitur, and yet… you think, ‘Man, I’d like to have a beer with that guy.’ So why shouldn’t he explain why human-derived protein is the way to go for humanity now?”
After the infomercial, Diabaté delivers a grim prediction: most of the world’s population could starve within a decade due to food shortages. This revelation leads to Carol feeling increasingly isolated, culminating in an emotional breakdown as she grapples with her exclusion from the group.
As the episode progresses, Carol learns about the collective’s plan to transform survivors through a controversial stem cell procedure, to which she emphatically denies consent. Her resolve is clear when she declares, “Fuck ’em,” rejecting the group’s advances to reconcile.
The episode closes with Manousos, a reclusive character portrayed by Carlos-Manuel Vesga, on a quest to find Carol after listening to her tapes. Future episodes are set to drop weekly, building anticipation for the Season 1 finale slated for December 26.
