Verdugo Hills Point Guard Starts Nonprofit to Support Armenian Students
Alexander Kasumyan: From Court Champion to Empowering Armenian Youth
Alexander Kasumyan, the starting point guard for Verdugo Hills, played a pivotal role in securing the City Section Division III championship this past season. However, his contributions extend beyond the basketball court; he is also the founder of the Network of Young Innovators (NAYI), an organization dedicated to empowering ambitious Armenian youth in business, entrepreneurship, and innovation.
Founded in 2025, NAYI has already made a significant impact, hosting a job fair that attracted attention from young professionals. Chapters have emerged at Glendale College and in Yerevan, Armenia, serving as vital hubs for aspiring entrepreneurs. Through speaker panels and networking events, the organization provides opportunities for youth to engage with industry professionals and seek internship prospects.
“I was looking for a group myself,” Kasumyan explained. “I was unable to find anything. I opened an Instagram account, told a few friends, and it grew from there.”
Due to his age, Kasumyan’s older brother is listed on organizational paperwork; however, it is Alexander who leads the late-night Zoom calls, coordinating volunteers and establishing webinars.
“During my time in basketball, I’ve been the captain every single year,” he reflected. “I’ve learned about leadership and handling things under pressure.”
With his experience and leadership skills, Kasumyan is now focused on guiding young people in their professional journeys, fostering an environment where they can explore their aspirations and achieve their goals.
