Verbum Dei to Honor the Memory of David Greenwood with Jersey Retirement Ceremony
David Greenwood’s Jersey Retirement Honors Southern California Basketball Legend
David Greenwood, regarded as one of Southern California’s finest high school basketball players, will have his jersey retired on Friday night during a ceremony at Verbum Dei High School, his alma mater. The event is set to coincide with the game against Gardena Serra, scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., with the tribute taking place at halftime.
Greenwood passed away on June 8 at the age of 68 after battling cancer. During his high school career in the 1970s, he formed a formidable partnership with Roy Hamilton, helping to establish Verbum Dei as a powerhouse team. His exceptional talent led him to become an All-American at UCLA and to play 12 seasons in the NBA. After his professional playing career, he returned to Verbum Dei to coach the basketball team.
In 1979, Greenwood was selected as the No. 2 overall pick in the NBA draft, chosen by the Chicago Bulls, just behind Magic Johnson, who was picked first by the Los Angeles Lakers. He later secured an NBA championship with the Detroit Pistons.
As a coach, Greenwood led Verbum Dei to consecutive state championships in 1998 and 1999. Reflecting on his impact, alumnus DeAnthony Langston stated, “David was a hero to me. He’s one of the all-time greats in Verbum Dei history.”
This evening’s tribute not only honors Greenwood’s legacy but also celebrates the enduring spirit of high school sports in the region.
